IMF agent Ethan Hunt is seen killing people and stealing something from a plane, then bailing out, but it's not really him: the man pulls off a mask and turns out to be former IMF agent Sean Ambrose (Scott) who turned bad and stole the cure (code name "Bellerophon") for a genetically created disease called "Chimera." The real Hunt is assigned to retrieve and destroy "Chimera," and enlists the help of an international thief named Nyah Nordhoff-Hall (Newton), who is an ex-girlfriend of Ambrose. Hunt falls for her, then sends her off to reunite with Ambrose -- who wants her back -- as part of the mission. The film starts with a celebrated sequence in which Hunt climbs a sheer rock face in Utah to learn the mission, but most of it takes place in Sydney, Australia. With a screenplay by veteran writer Robert Towne (the plot is similar to Hitchcock's "Notorious") and directed by Chinese martial arts specialist John Woo, this 2000 film is simpler and more action-packed than the first.
