Cynthia Kellogg (Moore) and Joyce Urbanski (Headley) are friends who work together at a beauty salon. Joyce's husband James (Willis) is a bully who is both physically and verbally abusive to his wife. On a number of occasions Joyce has expressed her desire to kill him in order to be rid of him for good. One night Cynthia accompanies the Urbanski's to the fair. Once there, an inebriated James picks a fight with Joyce. Stopping the fight, Cynthia helps James back to the van where he comes onto her but she spurns his advances. Later James is found dead in the van. The story is told as a series of flashbacks. Cynthia comes forward to talk to Detective John Woods (Keitel) about the murder. In her version of the story Joyce is the killer. Later, Joyce arrives to tell her story only in her version, Cynthia did the killing.
