A female writer for the college newspaper is given the task of writing a story on the school's most popular student, who's been there for 7 years and has no interest in graduating. The girl tries to get a story, but the guy doesn't want to divulge. He falls in love with the girl, but she has a boyfriend. The student starts a prank war with the girl's boyfriend. The girl convinces the student to become more serious and finally graduate and the student convinces the girl that her boyfriend is a jerk and that she should be with him instead.

A student named Van Wilder is the most popular student on campus and has been for his 7 years in enrollment. A female reporter comes along and starts to write a story on him and Van and her soon realize that the reason he never graduated was because of his fears for his future.
