Nayak deconstructs the life of a movie star. Uttam Kumar - who almost plays himself in the film - is Arindam Mukherjee, a Bengali screen idol. The narrative starts from the point where Arindam is on his way to receive yet another award. On the train, he meets a journalist Aditi (Sharmila Tagore) and despite some initial reticence, opens up his life to her. What comes out, however, is an unhappy and guild-ridden man trapped inside the public image and hypocrisies of the high society. As Arindam recounts his chapters, Aditi bonds with him, while his guilt drives him to contemplate suicide. But in the fanfare and hype of tinsel town, is there a place for guilt, unhapiness or Aditi?
