NINE LIVES is a series of nine moments in time in the lives of nine different women, beginning with the story of Sandra (Elpidia Carrillo) -- a Latina serving time in jail who is frustrated in her attempt to speak to her daughter.

These women's stories overlap and intersect in various, sometimes startling ways. Holly (Lisa Gay Hamilton) is a woman distraught by the affects of an abusive father (Miguel Sandoval). The father is one of the guards who watches Sandra. The film explores relationships and the decisions which inform and effect them. Such as the story of a wife (Sissy Spacek) of a disabled man who contemplates an affair with another man (Aidan Quinn) and has gone as far as having a drink in a hotel room with him.
The stories conclude with that of Maggie (Glenn Close) who is visiting the cemetary with young Maria (Dakota Fanning). This is quite aptly a meditation on life as is the film.
