Joe Doucett is an alcoholic advertising executive whose life is hanging together by a thread. He ruins an important meeting with a client by hitting on his girlfriend, he seems destined to lose his job, and he gets knocked unconscious by a mysterious woman with a yellow umbrella during his drunken stupor. When he comes to, he finds himself imprisoned in a room, with only a TV, some Chinese food, a few toiletry items, and a daily supply of alcohol. He is shown on the TV that his wife was raped and murdered, with the disappeared Joe Doucett as the primary suspect. He then plans his revenge over the next twenty years of his imprisonment, sobering up, getting into shape, and learning how to fight. When he is mysteriously released, he is called by a strange voice, who informs him that his daughter is being held captive. If Joe can figure out who imprisoned him and why, his daughter will be let go, Joe will receive 20 million dollars, and his captor will commit suicide. If Joe cannot solve the mystery, then his daughter will be killed. With the help of a kindly nurse named Marie, Joe sets out with the few clues he has at his disposal to discover where he was being held, so he can kill his captor and rescue the one family member he has left.
