The Marshall knows well his friend, he's sure that the Kid won't leave the territory and will manage to bring together his gang. Nevertheless, for the sake of their old friendship, he doesn't start the manhunt at once and gives to William Bonney time to reach Mexico. But Billy the Kid is aware that the good old time is over for him and prefers to fight Garrett than to start a new life elsewhere.
