PAT GARRETT & BILLY THE KID was directed by Sam Peckinpah in 1973.

Pat Garrett and Willam Bonney (Billy the Kid) used to be close friends for years. Now Pat Garrett has just been appointed Marshall of the Lincoln county with the mission to arrest the Kid. Billy the Kid is soon captured and jailed but manages to escape after having killed two deputies. Garret is then called in by the State Governor who, urged by the wealthy rancher Chisum, asks Garrett to settle once and for all the Bonney case.

The Marshall knows well his friend, he's sure that the Kid won't leave the territory and will manage to bring together his gang. Nevertheless, for the sake of their old friendship, he doesn't start the manhunt at once and gives to William Bonney time to reach Mexico. But Billy the Kid is aware that the good old time is over for him and prefers to fight Garrett than to start a new life elsewhere.
