This is another of the many pairings of Doris Day/Rock Hudson. This is the story of Jan, an interior decorator who is forced to share a party line with Brad, womanizing songwriter who sings the same song "You are my inspiration..." to all the women he is involved with. Jan is unable to make any business phone calls and is very annoyed by his self centered arrogance. Brad just assumes she is lonely and jealous because he has a love life.

Unbeknownst to either of them, Brad's best friend is in love with Jan. He hints about how he wants to marry Jan and tells Brad how Jan shares a party line with a nut who "has a phone fetish" . Brad puts two and two together and is now interested in meeting and possibly seducing her as well.
After a party at a clients house and a drive home by Tony (Nick Adams), the clients son, they stop at a club and while Jan and Tony are talking Brad overhears her and knows she is the other end of his party line. He is attracted to her and when Tony, falls down drunk, Brad takes on the identity of Rex Stetson, oil man and Texas rancher. He helps her out and then spends the next few weeks taking her out and making her fall in love with him.
In the meantime, her party line enemy, Brad, tries to woo her.
