Jean, a deserter, arrives in the French harbour of Le Havre. He's got a hot-tempered nature and, after serving a few years in Africa, has been disgusted by the war. Although fearful of being arrested by the military police, he meets Nelly, a seventeen years old girl, in a bar and both fall in love. After having spent a day and a night with the young woman, Jean decides to take the next boat to Venezuela, and have Nelly follow him once he's settled there. But Nelly's tutor and a local bad guy will thwart his plans.
