Eben Adams is an artist who can't seem to sell a painting. Miss Spinney buys a painting but tells him that he'll never be a great artist unless he finds something to inspire him. After he leaves, he runs into a little girl, Jennie Appleton. She's wearing old fashioned clothes and talking about things that happened long ago. Eben does a sketch of her, which he sells to Miss Spinney. She tells him that he's found his inspiration. He runs into Jennie a few weeks later and she's aged three years. Each time he meets her, she's years older. Eben begins painting her portrait. In the meantime, he has fallen in love with her. But, he knows there is something strange about Jennie. Why does she age so quickly? He sets out to find answers.
