Detective Chief Inspector John Shefford is about to make a homicide arrest in record time when he is felled by a heart attack. Superintendent Kernan (Benfield) appoints DCI Jane Tennison (Mirren) to take over the case of a stabbed prostitute, much to the disgust of many of the officers who will report to her. Tennison is ambitious, driven, highly capable, and obsessed with succeeding on her first big case, but she realizes that the prime suspect, George Marlow (Bowe) is being held on insufficient evidence. She orders him released and presses her team to make a stronger case, as well as to connect the brutal killing of a young streetwalker with older, unsolved cases. Tennison also has to deal with the resistance of most of her subordinates, especially the active sabotage of DCI Bill Otley (Bell). Due to her obsession with the case and long hours, her relationship with her boyfriend Peter Rawlins (Wilkinson) also suffers.
