Based on the famous Hal Foster newspaper strip, and very loosely following the framewok of the 1954 movie, this film follows the adventure of a squire in King Arthur's court who disguises himself as a knight to fight in a tournament for the sake of a princess, getting sent on a mission by the king, then winds up battling the usurper of his father's kingdom, who also happens to have stolen Excalibur, the sword of King Arthur. Morgan le Fay and the Book of Merlin, a feisty princes, a jealous suitor, a rebellion, and a clever dwarf are all thrown in for good measure. Up-to-date production values make the film sparkle, fast pace keeps its weaknesses in script and acting from weighing too heavily. Animated sequences that fail to capture the flavor of the comic actually detract from the film. There are lots of swordfights that are good on energy but not exceptional for technique.
