Twenty-nine year old Judy Benjamin (Hawn) comes from an upper middle class American background. Judy claims to have rejected her parents' values but then meets Henri Alan Tremont (Assante). Henri makes advances on her and she rejects him until she discovers that although he's Jewish, he is also wealthy. Their relationship ends up on the skids when Henri doesn't see things as Judy does so she calls it quits. On the rebound Judy marries another man. Her husband dies unexpectedly on their wedding night so Judy makes a drastic and impulsive decision- she joins the army. Everything is going okay until her superior makes sexual advances on her and Judy is transferred to the NATO headquarters in Europe. Here she is under the command of Captain Doreen Lewis (Brennan). Judy soon becomes an, often comically, thorn in the side of the captain. When Judy meets up with the frenchman Henri once again, they become reinvolved and he proposes to her. But is Judy really ready for this all-important, and very adult, step in her life?
