This is a semi-autobiographical account of Prince's early career in his hometown of Minneapolis. The Kid (Prince)is a cynical, struggling musician at the First Avenue, a popular club known as a gateway to fame. His career is suffering when a young singing hopeful(Apollonia Kotero) arrives at the club in search of her own fame. Their blossoming relationship is short lived when she accepts an offer from Morris Day, the Kid's club competition, to lead his all girl band in an attempt to convince First Avenue's owner to end the Kid's career at the club.

The Kidd (Prince) who regularly plays with his band, the Revolution at First Avenue Night Club, meets Apollonia, a young singer looking for a job oppourtunity. They fall in love but when Apollonia decides to join Morris Day's girl group, the Kidd gets mad. The Kidd is also under pressure from the club owner to play music that he thinks people want to hear.
