Mike and his younger brother, Bobby, live with their mother, a hard-working woman who doesn't have much time to devote to her children. Her new husband, known to the intimidated children as "The King", begins to beat up Bobby. The two brothers struggle to make a childhood for themselves and stay safe, but when The King steps up his abuse, Mike tries to find a way to help Bobby escape.
