The First World War has just ended. A soldier (Colman) with amnesia leaves the mental hospital where he was being treated and is caught up in the celebrations, but he can't remember anything -- not even his own name. He's dubbed "Smithy" by the music hall actress (Garson) he meets during the Armistice festivities. They fall in love, marry, set up house in the country, and have a child. During a trip to the city on his own, he is involved in an accident. His memory returns and he resumes his old life, remembering nothing of his new family and home.
