Earth is dying and humans are looking for an alternate place to live. NASA sends 6 astronauts to Mars to investigate the land and search for life. When they get there the base they were supposed to live in is destroyed. They find out tiny insects are on Mars and are eating everything up. To add to the problem, the robot they brought with them is malfunctioning and has gone into killing mode. Now stranded on the planet with no food or water they must survive the weather and these creatures and make it back home.

RED PLANET is a movie directed by Antony Hoffman in 2000.

2052. Earth is dying from pollution A team of scientists is sent to Mars in order to discover why the bio-engineered algae spread on the planet's surface have disappeared. But the shuttle is damaged by a gamma ray storm and the team, except for the commander Carrie-Anne Moss, forced to abandon the ship and land on Mars in the company of AMEE, a damaged robot locked on its agressive military program. The team has oxygen for an eight-hour period and strange local insects begin to observe them.
