Former bad guy Matt Calder tries to start a new life in the northwest wilderness with his young son after the boy's mother dies. But a cunning gambler named Harry Weston beats and robs Matt of all his savings. Weston's tender-hearted fiancee stays to nurse Matt back to health, but Matt longs for revenge. Kay and Matt embark on a dangerous trip down the river after Harry. Marilyn Monroe also sings several songs in the movie, including "I'm Gonna File My Claim" and "River of No Return".

Pursued by the Creeks, a farmer, his son and a saloon singer must journey down a wild river. The puritanical Robert Mitchum and Marilyn fall in love.
