Detailed plot synopsis reviews of Riverworld

An astronaut in the year 2009 dies when his space vessel suffers an accident, and he awakens in a bulbous structure beneath a magnificent, vast river. A mysterious hooded being punctures the bulbous structure containing him, and he is forced to swim to the surface. Moments later, hundreds of others are emerging from the river. They are provided with clothing, apparently from the same beings. They are from all over the world and from all different times, and came to this new world when they died, carried by the hooded beings, who occasionally intervene in the functions of the new human society but whose motives remain an enigma. The humans transported to the new world have established tribal fiefdoms, and the group is quickly captured and imprisoned by a local warlord. The astronaut and some of his friends escape to the coastline of the vast river which coarses through the length of the world, and discover that a former steamboat captain named Samuel Clements (aka Mark Twain) has a steamboat to explore the river. One of the captives, who happens to be the Emporer Nero, challenges and defeats the tribal chief in combat, and vows to rebuild the glory of Rome on this new world. And all he needs to put his designs into action is the steamboat that Clements and his friends are planning to use to explore the wondrous new world.
