Just how many Robin Hood stories are there! This one, however, takes a different spin on
the legend of olde and the viewer is in for one of the more powerful versions of this
outlaw-hero! Starring Sean Connery and Audrey Hepburn (her first film in seven years!),
“Robin and Marian” is a love story for all time. Directed by Richard Lester, the
relationship between the two is picked up, some 20 years after Robin has left England to go
on a crusade with King Richard. Now, he has returned and what he expects to find is far
from his imagination. Twenty years is a long time and, indeed, much has changed.
Marian, for instance, has become a nun! But Robin finds the changes unacceptable and in
no time his long-ago and longtime rivalry with the Sheriff of Nottingham (played by Robert
Shaw) resumes. The movie is full of genuine excitement and a tragic love story, but a story
that seems not only to capture but to romanticize fully the relationship between the two.
