England, an industrial town. Laurence Harvey, is a young accountant coming from a poor neighborhood. Obsessed with the idea of joining the higher classes of the British society, he seduces Heather Sears, the daughter of the richest man in town. While Mom and Pop are not so happy with their daughter's new fiancÚ, Harvey is also secretly seeing Simone Signoret, an older married french woman, he has met at the local theatre. Simone Signoret falls madly in love with Harvey who soon has to battle the unspoken laws ruling social classes in England after WWII.
