A British aristocrat loses his butler, Ruggles, to an American in a game of poker. At first despising America, which Ruggles calls "the land of slavery," he eventually realizes this new country to be a land of opportunity. Coming to Red Gap, Washington, Ruggles learns that his place in society is not determined by birth and lets go of his stuffy upbringing. Getting drunk for the first time, and getting used to being on almost equal terms with his new employer, he also becomes the town celebrity. An excellent cook himself, Ruggles opens his own restaurant in hopes of persuing his own American dream.
