Based on the events of an actual New Mexico mine strike, this film examines lives in a company town inhabited predominantly by Mexican-American workers. The miners struck to gain wage parity with white workers. It also looks at the changing role of women in family life through the eyes of family matriarch Esperanza (Revueltas).
This film is a pivotal part of the canon from blacklisted Hollywood and was controversial because of this as well as its subject matter – questioning mainstream ideas about race, class and gender. Geer, who plays the sheriff, was among those blacklisted actors.
