Burt Reynolds stars as Sam Whiskey, a tough cowboy who gets what he wants. One day, he receives an unusual proposition. A lady and her husband robbed a bank. Unfortunately, the man died, and the gold bars have sunk to the bottom of the Platte River. She wants Sam to recover the bars and take them back to the bank they were stolen from. She wants them taken back before the crime is discovered and she is charged. Sam gets the help of a black blacksmith and a big man played by Walker to help him. All along the way they are dogged by down and out cowboys who want to find the treasure for themselves.
