Long acclaimed a classic of world cinema, "Seven Samurai" relates in epic fashion the seemingly small story of seven rootless warriors hired by a tiny farming village to protect them from raids by a gang of bandits. The characters of the various samurai and the villagers who fear them almost as much as the bandits grate on one another in humorous and dramatic ways; after training, planning, and some skirmishes, the final battle explodes into an apocalypse in master director Akira Kurosawa's hands. This 1954 film inspired the American remake "The Magnificent Seven," and shortly after its release was hacked down to various lengths between 2 and 3 hours and not restored to its original 201-minute version until the 1980s. Try to find a copy of that one; you'll be amazed at how much it absorbs you and how swiftly it flies.
