Viola's brother Sebastian wants her to lie to his school and say that he is sick so he can go to London to play in his band. Viola instead, decides to impersonate her brother at his bording school so she can play on the boys soccer team, as her school's girl's team was cut. Viola goes under an extreme makeover and is turned into her brother with the help of her makeup artist friend and a wig. when she arrives at the school, Viola is assigned to her room where she meets her roomate, Duke. She is attracted to him but seeing as he thinks she is a guy, he confides in her telling her that he likes another girl, Olivia but is too scared to approach her.
At first, Viola as Sebastian is a loser but with her friend's help he is finally thought as cool and as a ladies man. Duke inlists Viola to help get Olivia to notice him. But this backfires when Olivia starts to fall for Sebastian instead.
Viola also joins the soccer team and after being put on the second team, she is put forward to the first team. She becomes the legend on the team.
During the few weeks that Viola is impersonating Sebastion she has to work around some unfortuante meetings with her mother when her mother wants to see both her children at an event. With lots of changing identities in portaloos and jumping castles Viola pulls it off.
A day before the big soccer game, everything goes wrong. Olivia decides to kiss Sebastian so when she sees him getting out of a cab, she goes for it. She doesn't realise at the time, but the person she kisses is actually the real Sebastian, who is back from London a day early. Duke sees this happen and doesn't realise it wasn't Viola's version of Sebastian. With out realising that, Duke gets really mad at Sebastian and kicks him out but Viola has to worry about having Sebastian (who can't play soccer for nothing) lose the game against the rival school and also making Duke forgive her.
