The self-aware robot "Johnny 5" is transferred to the big city. A thief discovers his superhuman abilities and makes friends with him. He uses Johnny's naivete and willingness to help frieds agains him, tricking him into helping dig a tunnel that will be used for a robbery. Johnny eventually discovers what he has done, and works to make amends.
