Emily (Rooney Mara) is prescribed antidepressants to cope with her husband's (Channing Tatum) upcoming release from prison for insider trading. Her meds, prescribed by her therapist (Jude Law) give her strange side effects. One day, she blacks out, and her husband is found stabbed and dead in their apartment. She is convicted of the murder and is confined to a prison/mental institution. Her therapist is on the brink of being sued for malpractice so he starts an investigation of his own. He consults with Emily's ex-therapist (Catherine Zeta Jones) and starts piecing clues that strongly suggest that Emily may be faking her mental illness for other motives.
