Finding a bagful of lost money, would in most cases, be a ticket to easy street, that is, unless things go horribly wrong as in this edge-of-the-seat thriller. Hank Mitchell(Bill Paxton) was a regular small town guy happy with a job and an expecting wife but his life was destined to be turned upside down on a New Years Eve. With his eccentric brother Jacob (Billy Bob Thornton) and a friend Lou he dicovers a small plane buried in the snow. Out of curiousity, they explore the wreckage and what comes out is a bag with 4 million in hard currency. After hesitating initially, they decide to keep the money and play the waiting game. If anybody comes after the money, they burn it, otherwise they divide the booty. A relatively simple plan. Or so it seemed.

Things start going haywire the moment Hank tries to make it a "perfect" crime by putting some of the money back into the plane. He ends up smothering a man who sees him and Jacob there. Jacob confides in Lou about the incident and Lou starts to blackmail Hank. Meanwhile Hank's wife Sarah (Bridget Fonda) recovers a newspaper article which reveals that the money was actually the ransom amount for a kidnapped girl. Hank and Jacob are questioned by a federal agent, but they discover - to their horror - that it is one of the kidnappers, masquerading as the FBI, who has come back to get his money.
