Jane Goodale (Judd) is a producer of a popular daytime talk show and dating the show's executive producer Ray Brown (Kinnear). Six weeks into their relationship Ray unexpectedly dumps her and this sends her into an emotional tailspin. Jane begins an extensive study of male behavior using the habits of animals as her starting point, in order to try to figure out why she keeps getting dumped. Her research, after being published in the city newspaper, leads her to become an overnight sensation/ inspiration for single women everywhere. When Jane starts to use her co-worker and roommate with a reputation for womanizing, Eddie Alden (Jackman) as material for her research, disagreements erupt between them and she suddenly realizes that she has had a change of heart. Suddenly Jane is looking at Eddie in a whole different light and liking what she sees.
