When Grace Bichon (Julia Roberts) catches her husband Eddie(played by Dennis Quaid) out on a date with another woman she doesn't take his betrayal lightly. Furious and humiliated, she engages in a screaming match with her husband in the middle of the street. Immediately, Grace decides to move in with her sister Emma Rae (played by Kyra Sedgwick) in order to think over her situation. Emma Rae is an opiniated, feisty woman who does not hesitate to kick Eddie in the groin when she sees him. Things get worse for Grace when she discovers that her husband is a serial philanderer and has been cheating on her for years with different women. In a rash and ditzy moment Grace stands up at a local woman's group meeting and asks all those who have slept with her husband to raise their hand. Although her domineering father Wyly King (played by Robert Duvall) orders her to stop the nonsense and return to her husband, Grace balks at her Dad's directive. She's tired of being pushed around by domineering men like Eddie and her Dad.
