When they stop for a snack they discover they've forgotten the food. They pool their money and make a trip to the store. Along the way, they have several adventures; such as, they get caught on a bridge with a train coming and they get off just in time and while wading across a swamp they get covered with leeches.

The aspiring writer of the group, Gordie, tells stories. After a couple days, the boys finally find the body.   They're confronted by a group of local bullies, but after a short standoff the boys and the bullies go their seperate ways. On their way home the boys are pretty quiet, not knowing exactly what to say after seeing what they've seen.
