Based on a true story, the movie describes the last months of the life of Serge Alexandre Stavisky, a little swindler who, in the beginning of the 30's, managed to become one of the most important figures of the French financial world.
In order to gain the public's confidence, Stavisky has to carry out a very expensive way of life. He loses millions in casinos, buys a theater and racing horses. He must also bribe the innumerable persons who could be a danger to him. Finally, his own bank issues international bonds whose unique beneficiary is himself.
Stavisky's foreseeable ruin will be exploited by the politicians during this pre-WWII period.
