The wealthy industrialist Enrico Fontana is married to Paola for seven years now. When he finds photos he had never seen of her in the sleeping room of his wife, he hires a private detective, Carloni, to check whether she's having an affair. Carloni drives to Ferrara, Paola's hometown, makes some investigations and discovers that Paola met her husband just a few days after the accidental death of her best-friend Giovanna who was about to marry Guido Conti.
Guido is informed that someone is asking questions about him and Paola and drives to Milan to warn Paola he hasn't seen since her wedding. One understands soon that both were lovers and that they could have prevented Giovanna's accidental death then in Ferrara but didn't do anything to save her. They use not to speak about that event but they haven't forgotten it. They rekindle their love affair and Guido suggests to Paola to leave her husband and Milan and to follow him. But Paola is now used to a gilded life she doesn't want to give up and would prefer instead that Guido murders her husband Enrico.
