This is a peek into the dangerous lives of test pilots in the days before World War II. Gunner Sloane (Tracy) and Jim Lane (Gable) are fast friends. Lane is a flying ace who has a chance meeting with the beautiful Ann Barton (Loy) when his plane stalls in her parents's field. They fall in love and marry. Gunner continues to be a part of their lives. As the dangers increase for Lane in air races and testing, his nerves and marriage are also tested. He lubricates his problems with drink, which only worsens them. Can he continue to fly and still be a good husband?
