His marriage with Sarah (Kathleen Turner) is deteriorating. Muriel Pritchett (Geena Davis) gets romantically interested in Macon and he finds himself getting more and more attracted to her. When Sarah learns of this, she wants to get back together and gets Macon to agree.
When Macon flies to Paris to research information for a new travel guide, Muriel has booked the same flight and they stay at the same hotel. Macon tells her however, he is there only for business.
Sarah comes over to take care of him, when he starts having back problems. She asks him about his relationship with Muriel, but he doesn't want to discuss it. After thinking it over for a while, Macon tells Sarah that he is chosing Muriel.
The movie ends with Macon, on the way to the airport, spotting Muriel hailing a cab and telling the driver to pull over. Muriel picks up her luggage and in doing so sees Macon inside. They smile.
Best part of story, including ending:
It's an attractive story and it just flies by too big clichés in the relationship department.
Best scene in story:
His odd-ball family members are very funny.
Opinion about the main character:
He is an endearingly clumsy man, who is in the wrong business for his disposition.
