A boy who concocted an imaginary world is surprised when he is approached by the two superheroes he created, asking him to help save their world. Max uses his wild imagination to create a world called Planet Drool and writes everything in his dream journal. He creates Sharkboy, a human/shark hybrid, and Lavagirl, who shoots fire and magma from out of her hands. His classmates, Linus in particular, make fun of him for his crazy stories. One day his two superheroes blow in via tornado at his class and whisk him away on a rocket to Planet Drool, to help them save their world which is being threatened by an evil darkness.

At Planet Drool, the oceans have frozen over, troubling Sharkboy, while Lavagirl's powers are weakening. They meet Mr. Electric, the henchman of the evil leader, and he releases his plughounds on them. They run but are later captured and sent to the Dream Graveyard, where dreams are left to die. The three meet Tobor, Max's robot who takes them to the Land of Milk and Cookies, in the hopes of having more pleasant dreams there. Max dreams of the Crystal Heart pendant, which they must acquire to stop time and save the planet. Mr. Electric captures them and takes them to his leader, which is Minus (Linus) who has corrupted this world with his own bad dreams. They escape and go to the Ice Princess to get the pendant, but Mr. Electric gains on them. He unleashes electric eels on Sharkboy who plunges deep into the bottom of the water. Lavagirl jumps in to save him, and when they surface they pass out. Max is saddened, and Tobor advises him to dream better dreams that are selfless. Sharkboy wakes up, but Lavagirl is dying. He brings her into the mouth of a volcano and throws her in to revive her. She comes back more powerful than ever. Max and Minus battle it out with their dreams but Max talks Minus out of his evil ways, convincing him to switch to the good side. Mr. Electric wants to rule the world and goes to Earth to kill Max in his sleep.
On Earth, Max gives the pendant to Marissa (Ice Princess) who freezes Mr. Electric, shattering him to pieces. Planet Drool is saved, Sharkboy becomes King of the Oceans, while Lavagirl the ruler of the volcanoes. Max spends more time with his parents, and doesn't distract himself as often with dreaming, but decides to live in the real world.
Best part of story, including ending:
I didn't like the visuals since they looked like a trippy dream sequence. The story was too out there for me.
Best scene in story:
In the Land of Milk and Cookies with landscapes of chocolate and cake. Reminded me of WIlly Wonka.
Opinion about the main character:
Max learns that it's better to live in reality than to escape in a dream world.
