Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Bishop's Wife

Loretta Young plays the wife of a bishop (played by David Niven) who feels called to build a magnificent cathedral to the glory of God, but struggles with a wealthy but selfish parishioner. When the bishop prays for guidance, meaning guidance to raise the money for the cathedral, help comes in the form of Grant, who reveals that he is an angel to Niven but nobody else.

In the meantime, Young has prayed for help for her husband, and longs for how life was before he was promoted to bishop. They may have been poorer, but they had more time for each other, and were happier.

Grant touches the lives of everyone in this story, including the bishop, their daughter, the maid, the stingy parishioner, and a crusty atheist professor, as well as the bishop's wife.

This long forgotten Christmas movie was remade in the 90s as the Preacher's Wife starring Whitney Houston.
