The setting is Boston in 1875. Olive Chancellor is a wealthy suffragette who takes under her wings the young Verena Tarrant after having listened to one of her speeches.
She decides to educate the young woman and to prepare her for a glorious future dedicated to the cause of women's rights. The lawyer Basil Ransome will also fall in love with Verena who's soon torn between her love with the young man and her affection for the excluse Olive Chancellor.
