In the late 1960s in New York City, a group of gay men throw a birthday party for their friend Harold. Personal truths are revealed when Michael, the host, invites his old roommate Alan to the party, a heterosexual who has no idea of Michael's sexual orientation. Questions arise what exactly a steady homosexual relationship is.

The climax focuses on the drunk men playing a telephone game, calling the one person, man or woman, each of them has truly loved and each confessing his love.
