Big city executive Bob MacDonald (Fred MacMurray) gets a wild hair and decides to buy an abandoned chicken farm. He informs Mrs. MacDonald (Claudette Colbert) what he has done and she is none too thrilled. However, she is dedicated and agrees to go along with what ever will make her beloved husband happy. Purchasing an old truck, they load up with farm animals and supplies then head into the mountains. Betty MacDonald cannot believe her eyes. The place is a rundown shack but the sparkle of joy it brings Bob gives her resolve to take on the task of restoration.

As they get settled they meet their new neighbors who are none other that Ma and Pa Kettle (Marjorie Main and Percy Kilbride) with their brood of wild children. Let's not forget to mention Ms. Harriett Putnam (Louise Allbritton) who is the ever enticing well to do ranch owner on the other side. Things progress nicely on the chicken farm. Repairs to the house are made, running water is installed, fences are mended and the chickens begin to lay.
Bob seeks to get a contract to sell his eggs and becomes more involved with Ms. Putnam as a result. The devoted Mrs. MacDonald begins to feel a twinge of jealousy. When Betty faints at the fair only to find out she is expecting she is overjoyed and rushes home share the joyous news. The hour grows later and later as she waits for the return of her husband. Finally a message arrives that Mr. MacDonald left the fair with the pretty Ms. Putnam while wife Betty was passed out.
That was the last straw for the grieving wife and she runs home to mother, baby and all never telling her husband the news. Betty refuses all contact with Bob until finally she is convince to return and confront him.
