Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Fox and the Hound

An all-star cast lends their voices to this Disney cartoon feature from 1981 where a young orphaned (a favorite Disney theme) fox cub is left near the farmhouse of the lonely widow Tweed (Nolan). She takes an immediate liking to the little critter and names him Tod (Feldman). Tod gets into a lot of mischief despite the best efforts of a wise owl named Big Mama (Bailey) to teach him to behave around the farm. Amos Slade (Albertson), a hunter who lives close by with his hunting dog Chief (Buttram), has a young pup named Copper that they will train to be a hunting dog too. The two young animals become best friends but when Copper goes away in the winter on an extended hunting trip with Slade and Chief the young fox fears his friend will be different towards him. Meanwhile a pair of friendly birds, Boomer (Winchell) a woodpecker and Dinky a sparrow say goodbye to Big Mama as they fly south for the winter leaving Tod alone with just Big Mama and Mrs. Tweed for company.

Chief teaches Copper the finer points of being a hunting dog. The young pup being bright quickly out learns the older hound, earning Chief's jealousy and resentment. In the late spring Amos returns with his dogs and a truck full of animal pelts. The two friends now full grown reunite but it is an uncomfortable and awkward encounter, especially for Copper (Russell). The hunter sees Tod (Rooney) and sets his two hounds on him. Chief has the fox cornered on a railroad bridge that spans a deep ravine. When a fast moving night train speeds down the tracks Tod ducks but Chief is struck and falls off the bridge badly injured. Copper vows to get revenge against former friend for his part in hurting Chief. Widow Tweed realizes her now grown up fox is no longer safe on her farm and she drives him to the forest, takes off his collar, and releases him. Out in the woods he befriends a kind porcupine (Fielder) and is introduced to Vixey (Duncan), a foxy lady fox. The now friendly pair of foxes but is soon chased by the vengeful hunter and Copper. When the hunter and his dog are attacked by a big black bear Tod comes to the aid of his estranged friend. Both fox and bear fall into the raging waterfall. Bruised and exhausted Tod barely pulls himself to shore before he has his final encounter with Slade and Copper.
