Mikael Blomkvist has a lost case brought against him by businessman Wennerstrom. Lisabeth Salander, a troubled but intelligent investigator, runs a background check on Blomkvist for Henrik Vanger who has a special task for Blomkvist. In exchange for dirt on Wennerstrom, Blomkvist agrees to investigate the disappearance and possible murder of Henrik's niece Harriet. Blomkvist needs help on the case, and Lisabeth Salander is recommended by Vanger. Blomkvist and Lisabeth begin working together on Harriet's disappearance. Lisabeth's research leads her to find out that Harriet's brother Martin committed the murders. Blomkvist breaks into Martin's house to look for information, and find out that Harriet might still be alive. Martin catches Blomkvist and prepares to kill him. Lisabeth saves Blomkvist and chases Martin on her motorcycle. Martin crashes in his car and dies. Then, Blomkvist and Lisabeth must find Harriet if she is still alive.
