Claire has just given birth to her first baby and is looking for a nanny. Changing her name to Peyton Flanders, De Mornay's character applies for the job. Claire and her husband Michael (McCoy) are impressed by Peyton's credentials and her apparent caring nature and hire her immediately. Peyton moves in with the family and bit by bit starts to wreak havoc in the lives of the Bartels. She flirts with Michael and breast feeds the baby, much to Claire's chagrin. The situation turns deadly one afternoon when Claire's friend Marlene Craven (Moore) comes over to the house but finds no one home but Peyton. Marlene has had her suspicions about Peyton from the start. The two get into a disagreement in the greenhouse and it is here that Peyton kills the other woman. Claire is stunned to discover her best friend dead and believes Peyton had something to do with it although Michael refuses to accept that idea, he instead passes it off as a crazy notion.
