Bogart is hired as a publicist by Rod Steiger, a crooked manager, in order to promote an unknown boxer coming from Argentina. Toro Moreno is big and strong but isn't a real boxer. Nevertheless, thanks to Bogart's relations in the medias, Toro becomes a star without having boxed a single round.
Steiger fixes the first 25 fights of Toro so that his boxer is given the opportunity to challenge the heavy-weight champion of the world. When Bogart understands that Toro will be sacrificed and slaughtered during the fight and that he won't even earn 50 dollars for it, Bogie gets angry.
