A young Caucasian woman aspires to be a serious writer. Just having graduated college she comes back to live in her hometown of Jackson, Mississippi where there is nothing but racism and disrespect surrounding her. All of her friend who have married and have had children all have maids to whom they treat with very little dignity. Skeeter decides to write a story about these maids so that they can have their stories told. At first they are apprehensive but then agree to share their stories no matter what the consequences may be.

Best part of story, including ending:
I loved this story because it is very well written and it makes you take pity on these characters.
Best scene in story:
My favorite scene is when Skeeter goes to Abileen's house and finds all of the maids waiting to share their stories.
