Detailed plot synopsis reviews of The Invisible

A young man has a near-death experience when almost murdered by a drug gang. Justin Chatwin plays the lead character of Nick Powell. He lives alone with his mother because his father died. His relationship with his mother, who is very wealthy, is strained and uncomfortable for him. She has his life pre-programmed and does not care much about his feelings. He wants to go to London to study creative writing. His poetry is quite good. But his mother will not permit this. He plans to go anyway leaving without her permission. To get enough money for the trip, he prepares homework assignments for other students at high school who pay him. He is a loner and only has one friend named Pete (played by Chris Marquette). Pete gets in trouble with a young woman, who is a petty thief and a drug dealer, named Annie (played by Margarita Levieva). Pete owes her money. She has a gang of young men who follow her orders. They beat up Pete. She cuts one of his fingers slightly.

Annie´s home life is terrible. Her step-mother ignores her very young brother and does nothing to take care of him. Her father is an ex-cop who is brutal to her. She has an older boyfriend who is an ex-con on parole. She helps him steal cars. While he is stealing a car, she takes a tire iron and smashes a window of a nearby jewelry store to rob the things from the window. He gets angry at her for being so reckless. The next morning she takes the bag of jewels when she leaves his house. He demands she give the jewels to him.   She leaves with the jewels anyway. To get revenge, he calls in an anonymous tip to the local police telling them she stole the jewels. At school she puts the bags of jewels in her locker. She notices Pete is watching what she does.

Later in the day, the police come to school, search her locker and find the stolen jewels. She is arrested for the theft. She mistakenly thinks Pete turned her in to the police. When she is out of jail, she takes her gang to beat up Pete for ratting her out. Pete knows his friend, Nick, is supposed to be already on a plane to London, so when tortured, he confesses it was his friend Nick who called the police on her. But his friend Nick, hooks up with a pretty girl at a party and decides not to go to London after all.   When Annie and her gang come looking for Nick, they have Pete in the car with them. They find Nick walking down the street. They get out of the car and chase Nick into the woods. The gang beats Nick, while Annie forces Pete to watch. Annie and Pete both get out of the car and Annie delivers a death blow to Nick. They all believe she has killed him. They drag the body to a remote part of the woods. Nick loses his expensive watch on the way when it falls from his pocket. They throw his body into a storm drain. Pete does nothing to stop them and thereby becomes involved in the murder.

Nick's mother calls the police. She tells them of his plan to go to London, but they discover he never got on the plane. They start a search for the young man. They find Nick´s watch in the woods, but do not locate the body. Nick experiences all the things happening as an out-of-body experience. He can see and hear everything and everyone, but they cannot see or hear him. He is invisible to them. He goes to his school. He goes to his home. He watches them search for his body in the woods. He tries to get the attention of anyone but they do not react to anything he tries to do. A bird hits the window and the unconscious bird suddenly appears in his hand. Then when it comes back to life, it disappears from his hand. He realizes he is not yet dead, only unconscious. Suddenly he is desperate to help them discover his body, before he does die completely. He tries everything he can, to get any living person to notice him. The only one who he gets a connection to him is Annie. She starts to feel him and realizes he is calling to her and he is still alive.

When she goes to look for the body, it has been moved by Annie's ex-convict boyfriend. Annie has a fight with him over this, which ends with both of them shooting guns at each other. He tells her he put the body in front of the dam and when they open the water it will wash away forever. Annie takes his car and in a high-speed chase with the police leads them to the bridge near the dam.   The police find Nick´s body just before he is drowned. Annie escapes on foot, without the police catching her. Nick almost dies in the ambulance on the way to the hospital, but they revive him. Nick's mother is at the hospital watching over the boy who is in intensive care, still unconscious. Annie is bleeding very badly from the gunshot wound. Annie arrives at the hospital and convinces the mother she is communicating with her son. She tells the mother things only her son would know. Annie asks her mother to make sure a gift she left in her school locker for her younger brother is delivered to him. Annie's only wish is to do just one good thing with her life. She gets next to Nick in the hospital bed. When she dies, he wakes up, saying to her she did the one good thing she wanted to do, by her sacrifice.

After Nick recovers, we see him on the hilltop with Annie's little brother. He has a remote control plane Annie left for the boy. Nick asks the small boy what he wants to say to his sister who died. The little boy says simply “Hey Annie.” Nick writes it on the wings of the remote control plane. The boy flies it out over the hilltop in memory of his sister.
Best part of story, including ending: The out-of-body experiences that Nick has, where no one can see or hear him, are incredible.

Best scene in story: I like the scene when the little bird smashes into the glass window and almost dies but recovers, because it is a very interesting way for Nick to learn he is still alive.

Opinion about the main character: Nick´s character is very subtle and I wonder why he just did not go to London as he planned when he had the chance.
