Jean confesses to Hélène that he doesn't love her anymore. She simulates the same feeling towards Jean and imagines a cruel revenge. She will help Agnès, a young prostitute, to become respectable and organize an encounter between her and Jean. Both will fall in love and Jean, still unaware of Agnès's past, will asks her to marry him.
