Career Navy enlisted men Buddusky (Nicholson) and Mulhall (Young) are between assignments and are given a temporary job as Military Police to escort a prisoner to his destination. The prisoner, a young sailor named Meadows (Quaid), is very young and naive, and has been given 8 years in the Navy brig for the paltry theft of $40 from a charity box. His captors are unhappy about his sentence and their assignment, and proceed to give the kid a taste of life (a visit to a prostitute, getting roaring drunk, picking a fight with some Marines) as they travel from Norfolk, Virginia through DC and New York on their way to Boston, during his final 5 days of freedom. Carol Kane, Michael Moriarty, Nancy Allen, and Gilda Radner turned up in supporting roles in this terrifically tragicomic story.
