Virginia "Virgie" Cary has grown up with love and luxury. Her father is a Confederate spy during the Civil War. When her mother dies, Virgie's father sneaks back to their plantation home to attempt to spirit Virgie to safety.

They are aided in this attempt by a sympathetic Yankee soldier, and hindered by an evil one, who ransacks the Cary home. Virgie eventually must plead her father's case to President Lincoln.
